There are many SharePoint hosts to choose from, decision makers need to consider a number of things when choosing their source for SharePoint hosting.

Choosing hosting for your SharePoint needs is one of the most important considerations you have to make. All of your efforts to set up and configure SharePoint would be wasted if hosting was not reliable. People consider basic needs in terms of document space, traffic allowances and security. However, one should also consider less obvious aspects, such as customer service response time. While larger hosts tend to have the best connectivity, there is still a huge variation amongst vendors. It is wise to verify the hosts reputation in support. One simple test is to call their support line at whatever time of day is most critical for your enterprise and see how quickly you can get to the proper level of support.
 

One of the first things to consider is security. Have the host explain how secure there system including how they restrict access between users on a shared server. IF they mention sandboxing, availability of logs, virtualization, or other controls, you may be onto a good host. Also see how adding admins and other roles to the system is done.

SharePoint restricts the document types that can be uploaded. Make sure the the types you need are or can be supported.

Another major consideration is capacity both in storage space and bandwidth. Ask about how they grow with clients. If extra space or extra bandwith, what is needed to increase the storage or the bandwidth? Do you have to move to a different server to get more storage? What will extra bandwidth cost?

Document live on much longer now thanks to Sarbanes-Oxley and other compliance laws. The host should archive and maintaine nightly back ups that can easily be restore. Make sure that you know your companies policy prior to obtaining a SharePoint host.
